Spiers of Ayr planes

Listed are the 28 Spiers of Ayr planes that I have in my collection.

Plane No. 05 is a 15″ panel plane,  Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade and the cap iron are Stromont.

Plane No. 06 is a 13 1/2″ panel plane, upside down Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade and the cap iron are Mathieson. All parts are marked “10”.

Plane No. 07 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, embossed Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade and the cap iron are marked Stewart Spiers Ayr Scotland. All parts are marked “6”. The rosewood on this plane is stunning. This plane is not over stuffed.

Plane No. 08 is a 7 1/2″ un-handled, coffin smoothing plane. It is marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap and has a Johnson blade and cap iron.

Plane No. 09 is an early 7 1/4″ un-handled, screw sided, coffin smoothing plane. It is marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap and has an Ibbotson blade and cap iron. All stamped “7”

Plane No. 10 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, embossed Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade and the cap iron are marked Stewart Spiers Ayr Scotland. All parts are marked “6”

Plane No. 11 is an elegant early 7 3/8″ un-handled, screw sided, coffin smoothing plane. It is marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap and has a Norris of London blade and cap iron. probably started life with a Ward or Ibbotson blade and cap iron.

Plane No. 12 is a 15″” bench plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap.  The blade and cap iron are by Mathieson.

Plane No. 13 is a 13 1/2″ bench plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap.  The blade is by  I Sorby and the cap iron is unmarked.

Plane No. 14 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, marked Stewart Spiers on the lever cap. The blade and the cap iron are marked Stewart Spiers Ayr Scotland. All parts are marked “56”

Plane No. 15 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, marked Stewart Spiers on the lever cap. The blade is unmarked and cap iron by Mathieson.

Plane No. 16 is the 1st of 2, 3/4″ shoulder planes, marked Spiers Ayr on the front rosewood. The full-length blade is marked Thos. Ibbotson.  The wedge, body, and blade are all stamped “1” all original.

Plane No. 17 is the 2nd of 2, 3/4″ shoulder planes, marked Spiers Ayr on the front rosewood. The blade is marked, Stewart Spiers.  The wedge, body, and blade are all stamped “5”

Plane No. 18 is a Plane-O-Ayr smoother, embossed  Spiers, Plane-O-Ayr, Ayr. The blade and the cap iron are marked Stewart Spiers Ayr Scotland. All parts are marked with the ministry arrow.

Plane No. 19 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade is by Robert Sorby and cap iron by Mathieson.

Plane No. 20 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade is by W Marples and cap iron by Mathieson.

Plane No. 21 is a coffin sided smoothing plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade is by Pearson and cap iron by Mathieson. The model is not overstuffed.

Plane No. 22 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap. The blade is by Robert Sorby and cap iron unmarked. The model is not overstuffed.

Plane No. 23 is a 13 3/4″ bench plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the lever cap.  At present, it has no blade or cap iron.

Plane No. 24 is 13 1/2 ” bench plane, marked Spiers Ayr on the brass bow. It has a rosewood wedge, with a Mathieson blade and cap iron.

Plane No. 25 is a parallel sided smoothing plane, marked Stewart Spiers on the lever cap. The blade and cap iron are by Ward. All parts stamped “1”
